NPR gets why the Glee GQ shoot is gross. 
Michele and Agron both play characters on Glee with a lot of bite and resolve to them; they’re not always likable, but they’re not eyelash-batting ninnies, either. In fact the eyelash-batting ninny is Finn. All of that has been turned on its head here, and quite deliberately.
I’ve been debating on commenting, because some people *cough cough Joules* already refer to me as an “old lady’s blouse”, but I really liked the points this article hits on, and hey, that’s what the internet is for.
When I first saw the Glee GQ shoot, I was disappointed. Really??? Legs spread wide?? Lollie pop’s?? Porn star like vacant expressions? I remember in one episode, Rachel’s character even goes through an image crisis and Kurt volunteers to make her over. And Finn tells her he likes how she normally dresses, how her cute old fashioned poka dot goodness was more desirable, because that was her. Glee has a lot of moments that blow my mind in terms of “political correctness” and the kids/teachers occasionally doing horrific things to each other, but for the most part, they’re geeks who stick together, and I liked that. So why do an over the top sexualized photo shoot? Because Madonna/Britney/Gaga ect do? Because it’s a men’s magazine? Because they can?
I’m not sure how to phrase quite what I want to say, but why does everything have to be so sexy? Why can’t things just be awesome as they are?
You know.. with all the talk about Spirit Day yesterday, I can’t help but reflect on how some people think the GLBT community shoves their life style in everyone’s face. But honestly, as a straight girl, i’m tired of straight sexuality being shoved in my face. It’s everywhere, girls in next to nothing underwear on buses, store windows, magazines, music videos, TV etc etc etc.
To me? The photo’s look cheesy, like something from a barely legal porn site. I don’t think they’re artsy, or well done, or well costumed. But that’s just my take. ~_~
